FileMarvel has all the power and speed that programmers and production support staff need to build test data, check production files and so on. Online editing and viewing of VSAM, PDS, PDSE, sequential disk and tape datasets speed up application development and help pinpoint productions and testing problems. FileMarvel works on every type of VSAM file including KSDS, ESDS, RRDS, extra large records, alternate indexes and compressed datasets. It even gives you interactive access toyour DB2 databases.
FileMarvel lets you view and edit VSAM, sequential, BDAM, DB2 and PDS datasets through an ISPF terminal
Overview of editing a file with FileMarvel
Use FileMarvel to look at and maintain any kind of dataset - VSAM, SAM, DB2, BDAM or source, JCL etc in a PDS. Even tape. Things you can do to your datasets using FileMarvel include browsing, editing, changing the layout, copying, sorting / merging, printing and allocating datasets. Displays can be formated in a number of ways including hex, character and, of particular interest to application programmers, laid out to match a COBOL, PL/I or assembler copy member.

Selecting records
Tell FileMarvel which records you want to see and which you want to ignore. For example, skip any records where the account balance is negative.
Online or batch
You can browse and update your files interactively or you can run a batch job to do what you want.
No limit on file size
FileMarvel does not slow down as your files get bigger - it can handle files of any size with consistent performance.
COBOL & PL/I copybook support
You can get your displays and reports in copybook format, including only those fields you are interested in. The copybooks can be in a PDS, CA-Librarian or Panvalet. You can also choose normal character or hex displays of your data and flip between the display types as you feel fit. You don't need to know or to type field names - you can select them from an online menu displayed by FileMarvel.
Canned commands
If you have commands you use frequently, you can set them up as FileMarvel "Autoexec" commands to save time
Searching for data in files
You can easily search an entire PDS - no more rummaging for lost code or common field names: just search the entire PDS for "STORE-TOTAL" and FileMarvel will find every occurrence. You can even make a global change to a PDS, changing, for example, every occurrence of "STORE-TOTAL" to "STORE-TOTAL-SALES".
Allocating datasets
You can use FileMarvel to allocate VSAM datasets for you, based on a model definition if you like. No more having to remember (or type!) IDCAMS commands.

FileMarvel was developed by programmers for programmers.
We addressed all the jobs we did most frequently and took most of our time along with those that were most error-prone. The result was FileMarvel, a single tool for doing all the dataset management jobs we wanted to do. FileMarvel is fast, easy to use, consistent in its commands and able to fit into your software budget with room to spare.
